I chose to use Tortoise, and I think they are brilliant. The key benefits for me:
- Very low power consumption, and easy to drive with a low power motor controller. A totally different ballgame to the brutal electromagnet ones from Peco (etc).
- Built in switching for the electrofrog points
- Nice looking slow movement adds to the realism
My software sends a command to set the points, and then 5 seconds later "relaxes" the point motor. So rather than leaving power flowing to the motor, it just backs off and leaves the motor unpowered. I do this to reduce power consumption (even though it's only a tiny bit) and also to give the option to manually hand swing the point motor if I really need to.
